There are many types of engraving methods utilised to inscribe into metal.
The original and most traditional method is created by using hand gravers – sharp tools, used by hand to push (or hammer) through the metal at an angle to cut shapes, patterns and letters into the metal. This method is highly skilled and more time consuming that machine methods and can therefore be the most expensive of the methods for the customer.
The most recent technology developed for engraving is by using a laser to remove metal to leave an inscription. Laser engraving can easily offer a coloured fill option (such as black) to the engraved lines to help improve the contrast between the engraved detail and the precious metal.
Our service lies somewhere in between these two methods as we offer a mechanical, diamond drag engraving service. A diamond tipped tool is moved across the metal to cut the engraving pattern. Diamond drag engraving machines have been used in jewellery engraving workshops since the late 1800’s and can therefore offer a traditional aesthetic by producing a bright appearance to the engraved line. When cutting an engraved pattern or text with a traditional style diamond drag engraving tool, you are able to consider and incorporate cutting styles into the material that can emulate historical styles as well as contemporary. The direction, depth and type of engraving style chosen will affect how the metal is cut, how light is reflected from the engraving and also how the engraving contrasts with the surrounding finish of the metal Each engraving, from the smallest inscription to the largest design, is carefully designed to make the most of these affects, allowing the best possible result on your piece. The advantage to the customer is that this type of engraving is less time consuming than hand engraving and therefore, is offered at a more affordable price point. Diamond tip engraving offers a clear, bright cut look to your engraving. For photographic examples of our diamond tip engraving, please click here.
